Thank you so much for looking after the green in Carcavelos, Forest Impact!
On Sunday, 13 October, some SOS volunteers were at Quinta de São Gonçalo to help clean and maintain the Myawaki mini-forest planted earlier this year by Forest Impact, which volunteers from SOS Quinta dos Ingleses also attended.
In just 200 square metres, there will be 600 plants with 32 native species. We've confirmed that removing overgrown weeds is hard work! 😁 Of course, we took the opportunity to publicize the cause of the Quinta dos Ingleses forest.
The Myawaki Forest is a method of creating a forest devised by Japanese botanist Akira Myawaki. According to Forest Impact, the methodology involves ‘planting a wide variety of plant species in a small area, with the aim of creating a highly diverse, self-sustaining forest capable of withstanding natural disasters.’ It consists of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants to recreate a natural forest. ‘The Myawaki forest requires less water, no fertilizer or pesticides, as it is adapted to local soil and climate conditions.’ It is, therefore, an excellent tool to help combat climate change and promote biodiversity in urban environments. Let's hope that more Myawaki forests are planted throughout the municipality and that this planting can soon be extended to Quinta dos Ingleses. 🌿🌳💚
