Mini-demonstration done, mission accomplished!
On July 9th, we attended the opening of "A Digital with Purpose Global Summit Cascais 2024", which describes Cascais as "internationally recognised as one of the most sustainable and intelligent cities, (...) and an inspiring canvas for an event that seeks to explore the connection between technology and sustainability."
We were there with our "Alice" to warn the 200 or so congress participants that this vision of Cascais as a "sustainable and intelligent city" is a misconception: "STOP Greenwashing!"
Why? A city that proclaims itself to be "green" and at the forefront of sustainability and environmental protection does not approve a mega-development 160 metres from the sea, nor does it promote the destruction of the last green lung on our coastline to build 850 flats in seven-storey buildings.
To be genuinely sustainable, to look after the environment and the public interest of Cascais and its population would be to create a renaturalised urban park, covering the whole of Quinta dos Ingleses and the land in front of Bairro da Torre.
This congress was organised by GeSI with the "High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic." The inaugural session was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, former vice-president of Cascais City Council.
We want to thank everyone who could attend this small, mid-week event, which was called in just a few days! Thanks also to our mascot, Alice, by Superlinox!
